Dr. phil. Tom Bieling is a senior researcher at Design Research Lab (Berlin University of the Arts), where he heads the Social Design research cluster. He is a Postdoc at the Centre for Design Research (HAW Hamburg), currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Trento and teaches Designtheory at NDU St. Pölten.

In his research, he mainly focuses the social and political dimensions of design, for example in relation to age, poverty, disability, gender, health, intercultural dialogue or protest culture. In addition to a visiting professorship at the German University in Cairo for several years, he has been lecturing at international institutions and universities, including Mumbai, São Paulo, Basel, Milan, Portland, Spokane, Edinburgh, Brussels, Nottingham, Tallinn, Bremen, Potsdam, Hildesheim, Eindhoven and Rotterdam.

His projects and exhibitions have been shown in New York, London, Manchester, Sheffield, Vienna, Milan, Edinburgh, Eindhoven, St. Etienne, Brno, Karlsruhe, Dresden, Darmstadt, Munich, Cologne and Berlin. He was recently announced “Young Innovator of the Year” by the Falling Walls Consortium. He is the initiator of the DESIGNABILITIES Design Research Journal, co-editor of the book series "Design Meanings" and author of numerous publications. His latest book "Inklusion als Entwurf" (Birkhäuser/DeGruyter) has been released just a couple of days ago. With "Design (&) Activism" and "Gender (&) Design" two more books will be published this year.
